Print Marketing Tips

Envelope Printing

An envelope is the first thing a recipient sees before they ever open your letter, invoice, or marketing piece. A plain white envelope with a handwritten or label address tells the recipient nothing. A custom-printed envelope with your logo, branding, and a professional finish tells them who it is from before they break the seal - and for marketing mail, a strong envelope design is often the difference between an envelope that gets opened and one that gets discarded.

Copies America prints custom business envelopes in two product lines built for two different needs. 1-Color Envelopes for everyday correspondence - invoices, statements, and official letters - where a clean single-color logo and return address keep costs low at high volume. Offset Envelopes for full CMYK color printing when the envelope itself is part of your marketing message, such as direct mail campaigns and premium client correspondence.

Both product lines are available in standard business sizes including #10, #9, #6-3/4, and larger formats up to 9" x 12", with window or non-window options and your choice of seal type.

1-Color vs. Offset Envelopes

1-Color Envelopes Single ink color for return address, logo, and basic branding. Lower cost per envelope - ideal for high-volume everyday business mailing where a clean, professional brand impression is the goal, such as invoices, statements, and client correspondence.
Offset Envelopes Full CMYK color printing for multi-color logos, brand patterns, and premium presentation. Better suited for marketing envelopes, direct mail campaigns, and any situation where the envelope itself is part of the marketing message rather than a plain carrier for the contents.
Our Recommendation Choose 1-Color for everyday correspondence, invoices, and any mailing where cost per envelope matters most. Choose Offset when your envelope needs to make a strong first impression as part of a marketing campaign.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common business envelope size?

The #10 envelope, measuring 4.125" x 9.5", is the standard business envelope used for letters, invoices, statements, and most business correspondence in the United States. It is the size that fits a standard 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper folded in thirds, and it is the format most recipients expect from a business. We also offer #9 and #6-3/4 envelopes for smaller correspondence pieces, square flap formats like A2, A6, and A7 for invitations and personal-style mailings, and larger 6" x 9" and 9" x 12" formats for catalogs, brochures, and larger enclosures. If you are setting up a standard mailing program and are unsure which size to choose, #10 is the safe default for the vast majority of business use cases.

Should I choose 1-color or offset envelope printing?

Choose 1-color printing if your envelope's job is functional - carrying invoices, statements, or routine correspondence where you want your logo and return address to look professional without paying for full-color production. Single-color printing is noticeably less expensive per piece, which matters significantly when you are mailing hundreds or thousands of envelopes a month. Choose offset full-color printing if the envelope itself needs to do marketing work - for example, a direct mail campaign where a bold colored envelope design increases the chance the piece gets opened rather than discarded, or client-facing correspondence for a premium brand where a fully branded, multi-color envelope reinforces your positioning. As a simple test: if the contents matter more than the envelope, choose 1-color; if the envelope is part of the message, choose offset.

What is the difference between window and non-window envelopes?

Window envelopes have a clear plastic panel through which the recipient address printed on your enclosed document - typically an invoice or statement - is visible from the outside. This eliminates the need to separately print or label the address directly on the envelope, since the address printed on the letter shows through the window in the correct position. Window envelopes are the standard choice for invoices, statements, and any high-volume mailing using variable data printing for addresses. Non-window envelopes require you to either print the address directly on the envelope face or apply a label, and are the better choice for personalized letters, marketing mail, and any correspondence where a clean, unbroken front face supports the design.

Are your envelopes USPS mailable?

Yes. All standard sizes we offer meet USPS mailing requirements for both first-class and standard mail. When printing on the face of the envelope, USPS requires the bottom 5/8" of the envelope to remain clear so automated equipment can read postal barcodes, and a clear zone on the right portion of the face for the destination address. If you are unsure how your envelope design interacts with these clearance requirements, contact us before finalizing your artwork and we will confirm your layout meets USPS specifications for your chosen size and mail class.

Can I print my logo in a custom PMS color on 1-color envelopes?

Yes. 1-color envelope printing is not limited to black ink - you can specify any single PMS (Pantone Matching System) color to match your brand identity exactly. Many businesses use their primary brand color for envelope printing since it reinforces brand recognition at a glance, even with single-color production. To ensure an accurate match, provide your exact PMS number when ordering rather than describing the color, since color names and screen colors can vary significantly from the actual printed ink. If you do not know your brand's PMS number, our team can help you identify it from your existing brand materials or logo files.

How do I set up my file correctly for envelope printing?

Envelope flat layouts are not the same as the finished folded envelope - they have specific areas including the flap, seam, fold lines, and USPS barcode zone where no printing should appear, and the flat dimensions differ from the finished folded size. For example, a #10 envelope's flat size is 9.5" x 4.125", but the design area and safe zones depend on where the flap and seams fall once folded. Contact us at 1-800-423-2679 before you begin designing and we will provide the correct flat template for your chosen size, so your logo, return address, and any other elements land in the right position once the envelope is folded and glued. Use 300 DPI minimum resolution for any logo artwork, vector EPS or AI format for the sharpest 1-color output, and export your final file as a print-ready PDF or vector file.

What seal types are available?

We offer two standard seal types: gummed flap, the traditional moisten-and-seal style used on most business envelopes, and self-seal, a peel-and-stick adhesive strip that does not require moistening. Self-seal is increasingly popular for high-volume mailing operations because it speeds up the stuffing and sealing process and produces a more consistent seal than gummed flaps, which can sometimes seal inconsistently in humid conditions. Specify your preferred seal type when placing your order - if you do not have a strong preference, we are happy to recommend the better option based on your mailing volume and process.

How long does envelope production take and do you ship nationwide?

Standard production time is 3 to 5 business days from file approval for both 1-Color and Offset envelopes, not including shipping transit time. Rush production is available on request - contact our team before placing your order if you have a deadline to confirm availability and pricing. Copies America ships envelopes to any address in the contiguous United States from our Plainview, New York production facility. For businesses with ongoing envelope needs, many clients set up standing reorders so they never run low on branded stock - contact us if you would like to discuss a recurring order schedule that matches your typical mailing volume.
