About Carbonless Forms NCR Standard

Carbonless NCR standard forms are custom-printed business forms that create instant duplicate or triplicate copies the moment you write or type on the top sheet - no carbon paper, no separate copying, no mess. The NCR (No Carbon Required) coating on each sheet transfers pressure from a pen or stylus to the sheet below, producing a clean, readable copy every time.

Our standard carbonless forms are collated as loose sets - each set contains the number of parts you select (2 or 3), glued or padded together at the top so the sets stay organized and separate cleanly after use. Printed in full color or black on your choice of white, yellow, or pink NCR stock, with your logo, company name, form fields, numbering, and any other content your business requires.

How NCR Paper Works

Top Sheet (White)

CB - Coated Back

The top sheet is coated on the back with micro-encapsulated dye. Writing pressure breaks the capsules, releasing dye that reacts with the sheet below to create a copy.

Middle Sheet (Yellow)

CFB - Coated Front & Back

The middle sheet (in 3-part sets) is coated on both sides - it receives the impression from above and passes it to the sheet below simultaneously.

Bottom Sheet (Pink)

CF - Coated Front

The bottom sheet is coated on the front only. It receives and permanently holds the final copy impression. No ink or ribbon required at any point in the process.

Frequently Asked Questions - Carbonless Forms NCR Standard

What does NCR stand for and how does carbonless paper work?

NCR stands for No Carbon Required. Carbonless NCR paper uses a chemical coating system to transfer writing from one sheet to the sheets below without any carbon paper, ink, or ribbon. The top sheet (white) is coated on its back with micro-encapsulated dye. When pressure from a pen or stylus is applied, the capsules break and the released dye reacts with a clay coating on the front of the next sheet, creating a sharp, permanent copy. Middle sheets in 3-part sets are coated on both front and back, allowing them to receive and pass the impression simultaneously. The bottom sheet is coated only on the front to receive the final copy. The result is clean, legible, smudge-free copies produced the moment you finish writing - with no mess, no delay, and no additional equipment required.

What is the difference between 2-part and 3-part NCR forms?

A 2-part NCR form produces two copies simultaneously - a white original and a yellow duplicate. This is the most common format used for invoices, receipts, work orders, and purchase orders where one copy goes to the customer and one stays with your business. A 3-part NCR form produces three copies - white, yellow, and pink. This is ideal for workflows that require three separate departments or parties to each receive their own copy. For example, a service company might give the white copy to the customer, keep the yellow copy in the job file, and send the pink copy to the billing or accounting department. A 4-part form - white, yellow, pink, and gold - is also available for more complex multi-department documentation workflows.

What is the difference between standard loose sets and pads with wraparound covers?

Standard loose NCR sets are collated and glued at the top edge so they stay organized as a block but each set tears away cleanly after use. This format is ideal for counter, desk, and office environments where you always have a flat writing surface available. NCR pads with a chipboard wraparound cover are bound in sets of 25 or 50 with a protective chipboard cover that slides between sets as you write. The cover serves two critical functions - it prevents pen pressure from bleed-through to the forms below the current set, and it acts as a built-in writing surface for field use. If your team completes forms on job sites, in vehicles, at customer locations, or anywhere without a stable desk or clipboard, pads with wraparound covers are the right choice.

Can I add sequential numbering to my NCR forms?

Yes. Sequential numbering is available on all carbonless NCR form products. Sequential numbers allow you to track and reference every invoice, work order, receipt, or service record by a unique number - essential for accounting, auditing, dispute resolution, and organized recordkeeping. Specify your starting number, the increment (typically 1), and the exact position on the form where you want the number to appear when you place your order. Our production team will add the sequential numbers during printing so each set in your order has a unique, consecutive identifying number. If you need numbering on specific parts only - for example, on the white top copy but not on subsequent copies - note this in your order comments.

What sizes are available and can I order a custom size?

Standard sizes for NCR forms are 5.5" x 8.5" (half-letter), 8.5" x 11" (full letter), and 8.5" x 14" (legal). Custom sizes are available for businesses with specific form dimensions required by their workflow, binders, or filing systems. Contact our team with your exact dimensions and we will confirm pricing and production availability. When designing a custom-size form, provide your artwork at the exact finished trim size with 0.125" bleed on all sides if your design extends to the edge.

How should I set up my artwork file for NCR form printing?

Submit a print-ready PDF at 300 DPI minimum resolution. Include all form elements in your artwork - logos, company name, address, form fields, lines, boxes, checkboxes, signature lines, and any instructional text. Use CMYK or black-only color mode. If your design goes to the edges of the form, include 0.125" bleed on all four sides. Keep all critical content at least 0.125" from all trim edges as a safe zone. Outline all fonts before saving your PDF to prevent font substitution. Note your sequential numbering start number and the position on the form where you want it to appear in your order comments. If you do not have a print-ready file, our design team can help you create one - contact us to discuss design services.

Can NCR forms be printed in full color?

Yes. The top sheet of a carbonless form can be printed in full color (CMYK) to include your logo, brand colors, and any full-color design elements. The color printing appears only on the top white sheet. Subsequent copies - yellow and pink - receive the impression of whatever is written or typed on the top sheet, but the background of those sheets is the natural NCR paper color, not a full-color reproduction of the top sheet's printed design. This is standard for all carbonless forms and is an inherent characteristic of the NCR paper process, not a printing limitation specific to our production. Black-only printing is also available at a lower cost for businesses that do not require color on their forms.

How long does production take and do you ship nationwide?
