A mechanically bound book uses individual holes punched along the spine edge, with a coil, comb, or double-loop wire threaded through to hold the pages together. Unlike a glued perfect-bound spine, a mechanically bound book opens completely flat and each page rotates a full 360 degrees - which makes it the right choice whenever the finished piece needs to lay open on a table, fold back on itself, or flip easily page by page.
Choose the hardware style that fits your budget and how the book will be used - coil for flexibility and a compact profile, comb for pages that can be removed and reinserted, or Wire-O for a more polished, permanent look.

All three mechanical binding styles use punched holes and let the book open completely flat. The right choice depends on budget and how often the book will be handled.
A continuous plastic coil threaded through round holes. Flexible, compact, and the most budget-friendly mechanical binding option.
A plastic comb clamped through rectangular holes. Pages can be removed and reinserted, useful for manuals that get updated.
A double-loop metal wire through the holes for a more polished, durable, and permanent finish - popular for presentation books.

All three are mechanical bindings that use holes punched along the spine edge, and all three let the book open completely flat. Coil (spiral) binding uses a continuous plastic coil threaded through round holes - it's flexible, compact, and the most economical option. Comb (GBC) binding uses a plastic comb clamped through rectangular holes - pages can be removed and reinserted, which is useful for manuals that get updated. Wire-O uses a double-loop metal wire through the holes for a more polished, durable, and permanent finish, often preferred for presentation books and higher-end manuals.
A perfect-bound book has a glued, flat, square spine - it looks like a traditional paperback and can be printed with a title. A mechanically bound book (coil, comb, or Wire-O) uses punched holes and hardware instead of glue, which lets it lay completely flat when open and lets each page rotate a full 360 degrees. If you need a book that functions - laying open on a workbench, folding back to a single page - mechanical binding is the better fit. If you want shelf presence and a printable spine, choose our Perfect Binding Books product instead.
Two finished sizes are available: 8.5" x 11" and 5.5" x 8.5". Minimum order is 20 books - orders below that cannot be processed. If you need a size outside these two options, call our team to discuss a custom quote.
Choose full color or black and white, and print either single-sided (with a blank back) or double-sided on both sides of each sheet. Single-sided printing is common for workbooks and manuals with fill-in space on the back of each page.
You can choose from 14 paper types when ordering, ranging from lighter bond and offset stocks to semi-gloss text weights, gloss and uncoated text and cover weights, and heavier 12pt and 16pt cover-weight stocks for a sturdier cover.
Bleed is optional and selected when you place your order. If any part of your design runs to the edge of the page, select the bleed option and build your file with 0.125" of bleed on all sides.
Submit a single print-ready PDF with pages in sequential order, in CMYK color mode at 300 DPI minimum. Keep text, logos, and other important content at least 0.5" from the edge where the holes will be punched, so nothing important gets caught in the binding.
