About Saddle-Stitching Booklets

Saddle-stitching is the most popular and cost-effective method for printing multi-page booklets. Large sheets of paper are printed four pages per sheet, folded in half, then stapled through the spine with two wire staples - creating a clean, professional booklet that lays flat when open and is easy to read and distribute.

This binding is ideal for booklets with 8 to 64 pages and is widely used for event programs, product catalogs, newsletters, menus, promotional brochures, and training guides. The fully automated production process keeps costs low even for short print runs, making saddle stitch the go-to choice when both quality and value matter.

Frequently Asked Questions - Saddle-Stitch Booklets

What is saddle-stitch binding and how does it work?

Saddle-stitch binding is the most popular and cost-effective method for producing multi-page booklets. During production, large printed sheets are folded in half and nested together to form a booklet block. Two wire staples are then driven through the spine fold - the center crease - to hold all pages securely in place. The result is a clean, professional booklet that lays flat when open and is easy to read, handle, and distribute. The name comes from the way the booklet is draped over a saddle-shaped support during the stitching process. Saddle-stitching is ideal for page counts ranging from 8 to 64 pages and is used across virtually every industry for event programs, catalogs, newsletters, menus, and promotional booklets.

What page counts are available and why must they be multiples of 4?

Saddle-stitch booklets are available in page counts from 8 to 64 pages. Every saddle-stitch booklet must have a total page count that is a multiple of 4 - for example, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, and so on up to 64. This requirement is not arbitrary. Because sheets of paper are printed four pages at a time and folded in half - two pages on the front and two on the back - any page count that is not divisible by 4 cannot be properly assembled. If your content fills 10 pages, for example, you would submit a 12-page document with two intentionally blank pages added. Our pre-press team can help you plan your page count before you finalize your layout to avoid wasted space.

What sizes are available for saddle-stitch booklets?

We offer three standard finished sizes for saddle-stitch booklets: 5.5" x 8.5" (half-letter, the most popular size for programs and newsletters), 8.5" x 11" (full letter, ideal for catalogs and training guides), and 8.5" x 5.5" landscape (horizontal orientation for menus, product showcases, and presentations). Custom sizes are also available for orders that require non-standard dimensions. Contact our team with your specific size requirements and page count and we will provide a quote. When designing your files, always set up your document at the finished trim size and add 0.125" bleed on all four sides.

How should I set up my file for saddle-stitch printing?

Submit a single PDF with all pages arranged in sequential order - not as printer spreads. Page 1 is your front cover, Page 2 is the inside front cover, and pages continue in reading order through to the back cover as the final page. Set your document to the finished trim size and add 0.125" (one-eighth inch) bleed on all four sides. Keep all text, logos, and important design elements at least 0.125" from every trim edge as a safe zone. Use CMYK color mode throughout your file - not RGB - and export at a minimum resolution of 300 DPI. If your booklet has crossover images that span two pages across the spine, be aware that slight shifting can occur during binding and it is best to keep critical content away from the gutter area.

What paper stocks and cover options are available?

For cover stock, we offer 80lb Gloss Cover, 100lb Gloss Cover, 80lb Matte Cover, and 100lb Matte Cover. The 80lb Gloss Cover is the most commonly chosen option for event programs, marketing booklets, and general-purpose publications. The 100lb Gloss Cover provides a heavier, more substantial feel suited to premium catalogs and brand materials distributed in high-volume settings. Matte cover stocks are preferred by professional services, healthcare, education, and legal firms that want a refined, non-reflective appearance. For interior pages, available stocks include 60lb Uncoated Text, 80lb Gloss Text, 100lb Gloss Text, 80lb Matte Text, and 100lb Matte Text. If you are printing a training manual or workbook where readers need to write, 60lb Uncoated Text is the recommended choice because it accepts pen and pencil easily.

Can I mix cover and interior paper stocks?

Yes. Cover and interior paper stocks can be selected independently on every saddle-stitch booklet order. A common combination is a 100lb Gloss Cover with 80lb Matte Text interior pages - giving you a polished, eye-catching cover while maintaining excellent readability on the inside. You can also choose a self-cover option, which means the cover is printed on the same stock as the interior pages. Self-cover is a cost-effective choice for internal documents, draft publications, and items where a premium cover finish is not required. Our team can help you select the right combination based on your budget, intended audience, and distribution method.

What printing options are available - full color or black and white?

Saddle-stitch booklets can be printed in full color on both sides (4/4), black and white on both sides (1/1), or with a full color cover and black and white interior pages. The color cover with black and white interior option is a popular cost-saving choice for training manuals, handbooks, and reference guides that do not require full-color interior printing. Full color printing is the most common choice for marketing booklets, event programs, product catalogs, and any publication where visual impact is important. All printing is done using high-resolution digital or offset presses for sharp text, vibrant color reproduction, and consistent quality throughout the run.

How long does production take and is rush turnaround available?

Standard production time for saddle-stitch booklets is 3 to 5 business days from file approval. This does not include shipping transit time. Rush production is available for orders that require faster turnaround. If you have a hard deadline, contact our team before placing your order to confirm rush availability for your quantity and specifications. We have been producing booklets since 1983 and have extensive experience meeting tight deadlines for events, conferences, trade shows, and corporate presentations. Providing your files early and with complete setup - correct bleed, CMYK color, 300 DPI resolution - is the best way to ensure your order moves through production without delays.

Do you provide a proof before printing?

Yes. We can provide a digital PDF proof for your review before your order goes to press. The proof confirms page order, margins, bleed, and overall color appearance. Reviewing your proof carefully - checking every page, verifying text is not cut off at trim edges, and confirming page sequence is correct - is the single most important step you can take to ensure a successful print run. Once you approve the proof, production begins. If you require a physical printed proof rather than a digital PDF, contact our team to discuss options and any additional lead time required.

Do you ship saddle-stitch booklets nationwide?

Yes. Copies America ships finished saddle-stitch booklets to any address in the contiguous United States from our production facility in Plainview, New York. Standard and expedited shipping options are available at checkout. For large orders or time-sensitive deliveries, contact our team to discuss shipping options and estimated transit times to your location. All booklets are professionally packaged to protect them during transit.
