The right panel folds inward first, and then the left panel folds over it - creating a six-panel piece with a front cover, four interior panels, and a back panel. This is the most widely recognized brochure format and is found in virtually every industry from hospitality and healthcare to real estate and retail. The tri-fold format is ideal when you need to present multiple topics, services, or sections in a logical, organized sequence. The standard tri-fold brochure is produced from an 8.5" x 11" flat sheet, folding down to a finished size of approximately 3.67" x 8.5". This is the most common size and fits standard #10 envelopes for direct mail without additional folding. Larger tri-fold brochures made from 11" x 17" flat sheets, folding to approximately 5.67" x 11", are also available for higher-impact marketing pieces. Custom sizes are available on request. When designing your tri-fold layout, note that the inside right panel - the one that folds inward - must be slightly narrower than the other two panels (typically 0.125" narrower) to fold cleanly without buckling. Design your tri-fold brochure as a flat, single-page spread at the full unfolded sheet size. For a standard letter tri-fold, your flat file should be 8.5" x 11" with 0.125" bleed on all outer edges. The three panels are each approximately 3.67" wide, though the inside (right) panel is typically 0.0625" to 0.125" narrower to allow for a clean fold. Mark your fold lines clearly in your design file but do not include them as printed elements in the final PDF output. Keep all text and logos at least 0.125" from fold lines and trim edges. Use CMYK color mode at 300 DPI minimum. If your brochure will be mailed, leave the back center panel clean for addressing or include an address block and postage indicia in your layout.
Tri-fold brochures are available on 80lb Gloss Text, 100lb Gloss Text, 80lb Matte Text, and 100lb Matte Text stocks. Gloss Text stocks are ideal for marketing materials, tourism brochures, and any piece featuring photography or bold color design. Matte Text stocks are preferred for corporate, professional services, and healthcare applications where a non-reflective, readable surface is more appropriate.
